The 2012 Consumer Electronics Show introduced hundreds of new innovations. One of those innovations was that Ford Motor Company has selected Scout® by Telenav, Inc.™ as the personalized navigation service to work with Ford SYNC® AppLink™.

ford escape 2013

The goal of this auto company was to choose Scout for a SYNC AppLink because it could provide a more personalized navigation experience for each driver.

ford escape 2013

Available on select Ford Motor Company models, SYNC AppLink is a program that allows drivers to access various smartphone apps using voice commands and buttons on their steering wheel. Scout, also announced at the 2012 International CES, is a new daily personal navigator from Telenav that is available on mobile phones (initially on the iPhone), online at the Scout website, and soon for Ford SYNC AppLink.

Apparently Scout is a daily personal navigator that eliminates the need to re-enter information every time you switch from a computer to your phone, or from a phone to your car. This will give Ford customers the chance to experience Scout as an integrated, personalized navigation service in the car, on their phone, and on the Web.

Scout differs from other navigation services because it provides a simple experience for daily information that is important and unique for each driver's personal journey. Drivers can easily and efficiently use this app to navigate their commutes, run errands, and search for places around them.

The Ford Motor Company is a leading producer of sport utility vehicles, offering no less than five vehicle lines for the 2013 model year. Its Expedition is the only model that features a traditional body on frame arrangement, with Ford's four other SUVs assuming a car or crossover unibody construction. Each SUV has something to offer with prices starting around $22,000 for the Escape and topping $50,000 for a fully-equipped Expedition King Ranch EL.

ford escape 2013

All-new for 2013, the Ford Escape can be powered by one of three engine choices. Its standard 2.5-liter four is the largest engine, making 168 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 170 foot-pounds of torque at 4,500 rpm. This 16-valve engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Two EcoBoost engines are available, technologies that bring in turbocharging and direct injection. The smaller 1.6-liter 16-valve four is rated at 178 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and makes 184 foot-pounds of torque at 2,500 rpm. The larger 2.0-liter engine makes 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 270 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm. Both EcoBoost engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Escape has a towing capacity ranging from 1,500 to 3,500 pounds.

Like the Escape, the Ford Edge seats five people, but offers a larger footprint for improved room. The standard engine is a 3.5-liter 24-valve V-6 engine that makes 285 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 253 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. Optionally, a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine is available on the front-wheel-drive model only. This EcoBoost engine makes 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 270 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm. The largest and most powerful Ford Edge engine is a 3.7-liter V-6 engine that makes 305 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 280 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. Like the base engine this one is available with FWD and AWD models. All Edge engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the latter with paddle activation. Select Edge models can provide towing of up to 3,500 pounds.

The oldest continuous SUV name in the Ford fleet is the Explorer, a model that lost its body on frame design in 2011 to assume a unibody layout. Introduced in 1991, the Explorer is one of the best-selling SUVs ever produced. The current model is also popular and seats up to seven people. It is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that makes 290 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 255 foot-pounds of torque at 4,100 rpm. Also available are two EcoBoost engines including a 2.0-liter four that makes 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 270 foot-pounds of torque at 1,750 to 4,000 rpm. An EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 will debut later this year. Ford uses 6-speed automatic transmissions across the model line. This model offers a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

Beginning in 2011, the Ford Motor Company started to showcase its Ford Vertrek concept, a vehicle offering a glimpse of the design direction Ford will be taking with several of its upcoming models. The Vertrek made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, critically acclaimed for its fresh style, roomy interior and advanced engine.

ford escape 2013

The Ford Vertrek is a concept in that it likely won't be built exactly as shown, but it will lend many of its ideas to future models. Some auto show concepts represent the vivid and sometimes unrealistic dreams of an automaker's design team. Other concepts are the real deal and are soon green-lighted for production. Auto shows allow car manufacturers to gauge customer opinion on a large scale and make adjustments to a project based partially on that feedback.

ford escape 2013

In the Vertrek, Ford is showing the world the design direction of its small SUV line. That line is called the Ford Escape in North America and the Ford Kuga in Europe. Both models are approximately one to two years from being replaced, perhaps sharing the same body style and incorporating many of the features found in the Vertrek.

ford escape 2013

Those features include a grille not unlike the one found in the 2012 Ford Focus, a compact car scheduled for North American release in spring 2011. Already on sale in Europe and most other Ford markets, the all new Focus is recognizable for its pronounced, sporty grille, an attribute of the Vertrek.

ford escape 2013

But, the Vertrek isn't a car and it certainly is tasked with doing many different things than the Ford Focus. The vehicle stands tall, riding on 20-inch wheels flanked by flared wheelwells. The most pronounced styling attribute, however, is the roofline which curves downward from the A-pillar to the D-pillar. The Vertrek resembles a sports model placed on top of a compact car chassis.

ford escape 2013

Inside, the Vertrek is all about room, offering 66 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second seat. That's important because the current Ford Escape has a roomy interior too, prized for maximizing its cargo space. Ford's designers made sure that one of the Escape's chief attributes was adapted for the Vertrek, doing that with great success.

Ford Escape 2013 part 03

ford escape 2013

The Ford Escape is a compact five-passenger sport utility vehicle introduced for the 2001 model year and a direct competitor to the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V. This model is sold in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations, and is one of the most popular vehicles in the Ford stable. The 2013 edition is all-new, a vehicle that builds on the history of this popular SUV.

ford escape 2013

When introduced, the 2001 Ford Escape offered a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine as standard equipment. That engine was paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and made 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway. Optionally, a 3.0-liter V-6 engine was offered, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and delivering 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway. Those numbers would be considered poor today compared to what compact SUVs can get.

ford escape 2013

The first generation Ford Escape was produced for 12 model years ending in 2012. This is uncommonly long for any vehicle, but Ford refreshed the Escape in 2008 to give it a new exterior and a new interior. The mechanicals remained the same, but the base engine was now a 2.3-liter four paired with a 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmission. This car delivered 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway or about average for the segment. Optionally, the same 3.0-liter V-6 engine was still available, now delivering 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

ford escape 2013

By the end of the first generation, a 2.5-liter four cylinder engine was offered, delivering 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway. Ford paired this model with a 5-speed manual or an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 engine was also available and paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This model delivers 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway.

ford escape 2013

Ford's initial foray into powertrain hybridization began in 2006 when an Escape Hybrid model was introduced. This vehicle was produced through 2012 before it was discontinued and replaced by the Ford C-MAX.

ford escape 2013

The Escape Hybrid was powered by a 2.5-liter four cylinder engine operating on the Atkinson cycle. Paired with a continuously variable transmission, a battery-powered electric motor also provides energy to turn the wheels. A nickel-metal hydride battery pack stored energy. This model delivered 34 mpg city, 31 mpg highway for best-in-class fuel economy.

Ford Escape 2013 part 02

ford escape 2013

All-new for 2013, the Ford Escape is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, delivering best-in-class fuel economy and many modern touches including Ford's telematics system. This five-passenger crossover sport utility vehicle offers three engine choices, a vehicle that is based on the European Ford Kuga model. Available in front- and all-wheel-drive, the technical specifications of this vehicle are presented here for your review.

ford escape 2013

The standard engine for the 2013 Ford Escape is the same motor found in the 2012 edition. This 16-valve four is of aluminum construction and makes 168 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 170 foot-pounds of torque at 4,500 rpm. It has a 9.7 to 1 compression ratio and measures 3.50 inches bore by 3.94 inches stroke. This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

ford escape 2013

One of two EcoBoost engines available, Ford's 1.6-liter engine makes 178 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 184 foot-pounds of torque at 2,500 rpm. This 16-valve four is of aluminum construction and has a 10.0 to 1 compression ratio. This engine measures 3.11 inches bore by 3.20 inches stroke. This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

ford escape 2013

The larger of two EcoBoost engines, utilizing the same direct injection and turbocharged combination of the small engine, displaces at 2.0 liters. This 16-valve engine is of aluminum block construction and makes 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 270 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm. With a 9.3 to 1 compression ratio, this engine measures 3.44 inches bore by 3.27 inches stroke and is also paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
